Death Investigation Oversight - Presenter, Sonia Capicotto, Death Investigation Oversight Council Secretariat

Death investigations in Ontario are led by the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. They work together to provide death investigations and inquests to ensure that no death will be overlooked, concealed or ignored. The findings are used to support the administration of justice and to generate recommendations to help improve public safety and prevent deaths in similar circumstances. 

This Death Investigation Oversight Council (DIOC) presentation will include an overview the history of DIOC and how it came to be, authorities under the Coroners Act and oversight function which includes an administrative complaints process focused on strengthening and modernizing Ontario’s death investigation system.

This webinar will feature Sonia Capicotto, Death Investigation Oversight Secretariat 

Sonia has over 19 years of experience in the Ontario Public Service working in the criminal justice sector. She is a passionate advocate for victims and has extensive experience collaborating with justice partners and with the public. Sonia is currently the Team Lead at the Death Investigation Oversight Council (DIOC) where she coordinates the planning and delivery of the Council’s core business areas as well as providing day-to-day oversight of the operations of the Secretariat at the Ministry of the Solicitor General. Prior to joining the Ministry of the Solicitor General, she held various positions at the Ministry of the Attorney General including the Ontario Courts of Justice, Criminal Injuries Compensation Board and more recently at Ontario Victims Services. Sonia’s background includes an Honours B.A. in Criminology and Sociology from the University of Toronto, and she is known for her skills in project management, policy development, research and relationship management.
