Grief Rituals in the Time of Pandemic

Since the beginning of human history rituals have been used to provide social and emotional support for the bereaved. We have watched them evolve and adapted along with the cultural and demographic shifts impacting our communities.

The past three years have brought the issues of illness, loss, and grief to the forefront of consciousness and challenged us in new ways as we interact with families trying to cope with grief, anxiety, social isolation, and new technologies.

This webinar will explore the roots of death and mourning rituals and borrow insight from Arnold Van Gannep’s, Rites of Passage, framework for understanding what types of rituals might be most meaningful at various points across the lifespan. Finally, participants will be provided with a ritual creation template and other resources that can be applied to a variety of different circumstances and situations.

This webinar will feature Thom Dennis, DMIN, LCPC, CT

Thom is the Bereavement Coordinator at NorthShore University Health System and has helped individuals and families come to terms with the death of loved ones for more than 25 years. Currently, he works as a hospice grief counselor, comforting the bereaved from diverse spiritual, religious, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. He also maintains a private counseling practice in Chicago, Illinois.
