Important Information Regarding Continuing Education Requirements for Personal Licensees
As you may be aware, earlier in the year the BAO announced changes to the continuing education requirements for individual licensees. These changes apply only to those who hold personal Funeral Services Licenses: Funeral Pre-Planner, Transfer Service Sales Representative, Funeral Director Class 1 and Funeral Director Class 2. The BAO announcement and requirements for 2020 can be found here:
We would like to take this opportunity to clarify a few points regarding these new requirements.
All OACFP education is accredited for Continuing Education purposes.
This year our webinar program was developed to specifically meet the needs of the new requirements. Webinars in 2020 will cover 4 hours of credit from Category A and 2 hours of credit from Category B. The webinars are free of charge for all members. In addition, our webinar library is also available to members free of charge. Each webinar counts towards 1 Continuing Education Credit (CEC). While no certificates are issued for viewing recorded webinars, each view does register the name and email address of the attendee for record-keeping purposes. As a licensee, please keep a record of which webinar you viewed and on what date, so you have those records when it comes time to renew your license with the BAO.
All other educational programs put on by the OACFP will qualify as continuing education. We will attempt to quantify the hours and category of each session at the time our agendas are published.
The OACFP and the Ontario Funeral Service Association (OFSA) have also formed a joint committee, the Bereavement Education Committee (BEC), whose purpose is to accredit those who wish to provide education that will be used as continuing education credit for licensees. The BEC was created at the request of the BAO to oversee the ongoing requirements for continuing education for licensees. Both associations have long stood for the value of continuing education and the necessity to have quality education available to all bereavement sector professionals. The joint committee was created to provide fair sector-based expertise for evaluating the continuing education opportunities that are available for licensees.
It is important for our members to realize that our regular members (licensed establishments) who wish to provide continuing education to their employees do not have to submit accreditation applications to the BEC. As a member of OACFP, each licensed establishment will be able to have 10 hours of continuing education accredited (by the OACFP) per year at no additional charge as a benefit of membership.
